the gold mine
God's love for us
Written on March 29th, 2005
How can God love me with all my faults and all my inherent deficiencies?
God can love you the way you are now the same way you can love a gold mine. Suppose with me for a while that you inherit a gold mine. You would be overjoyed! But the gold says, "how can you love me? Look! I'm all dirty. I'm all mixed up with that awful iron ore, and I have that rotton clay all over me. I'm contaminated through and through with boxite and mineral deposits. I'm ugly and worthless."
But you say, "O, but I do love you. You don't understand. You don't recognize your inherent worth. You don't realize that your worth to me isn't destroyed by the impurities. You see, I understand what you really are. I know you have all these imperfections now, but you see, I have plans for you. I am not going to leave you the way you are now. I am going to purify you. I am going to get rid of all that other stuff. You see, I understand what you really are. I see your inherent worth. I know that the iron ore, clay, and mineral deposits are not part of the true you. You are just temporarily mixed up with them for now. However, I know how to get rid you of the impurities. I know how to change you from what you are now to what you can be."
"I must warn you, it won't be easy. You will go through a lot of heat and refinement. However, look at this gold jewelry which has already been purified. Isn't it beautiful? That's what you are. Left to yourself, you would not become like this, but I know how to complete your beauty. I will make you beautiful, and you will make me rich."
This is how God sees us. He is not blind. He knows about our imperfections. But, you see, God has plans for us, both now and in eternity. He understands and sees our inherent worth more than we do. He knows how to change us from what we are now to what we can be. The fulfillment of this refinement process is not completed until we join Him in heaven. There, God will have completed our beauty, and we will have made Him rich.
The first step in pursuing a proper relationship with yourself is to dare, by faith, to see yourself as God sees you - no more, no less.
